MOBY POS is robust AND stable AND constantly innovating, and it has saved me buckets of time and money.

-Brian Hibbs, Owner

Comix experience

MOBY POS has dramatically changed the way Comix Experience does business.  “There are obvious changes like the immediate gain of at least 16-25 work hours given back to me each month.  MOBY POS has also reduced many smaller time-sink tasks (subscription maintenance, product identification from customer requests, etc.) pretty dramatically, which gives us more time to sell comics.”

Brian’s sell-through increased as well, and he can now pinpoint slow-moving stock without relying on his “gut” to do so.  “I’ve been able to easily identify scores of books that have become steady sellers that I would have missed in the “manual” days, as well as see things that I honestly thought had sufficient velocity that are in fact dust-collectors.”

“I’m also, and this might well be the most important gain, able to view my store more “holistically” rather than as separate parts. The ability to, say, create the minimum reorder points for a book format comic at the time I’m first ordering it rather than after I’ve sold through gets me thinking about a bigger picture for every item I carry.”

As much as Brian likes MOBY POS, it isn’t perfect.  “MOBY™ has a small number of user interface issues that drive me a little nuts in very specific situations, but they’re all small “Quality of Life” issues.”  These issues are more than made up for by MOBY POS’s strengths, like “how integrated all of its features are, and how it fundamentally understands how Direct Market retailing works.”

Comix Experience, in San Francisco, California, has been selling comics since for 21 years and using MOBY POS Basic for the last three.  Owner Brian Hibbs is one of the founding members of the Retailer trade organization ComicsPRO and frequent contributor to The Savage Critic. Comix Experience is a store that focuses on graphic novels and trade paperbacks, stocking exclusively comic related products.

Prior to using MOBY POS, Comix Experience used traditional paper and pencil cycle sheets and custom made spreadsheets to keep track of their product.  Brian Hibbs, the owner of Comix Experience wrote “The number of perpetual SKUs in book format material just reached the point where it was no longer efficient to deal with them ‘by hand’ any longer. Weekly inventory and reorder processes were claiming 4-6 hours a week, just for the books, and it was far too easy for items to ‘slip off my radar’ and not get reordered again until someone asked for them. Something had to give.”

When he finally decided to make the leap to POS, he decided to use MOBY POS, reasoning that “as a comic book store, it was important for me to have a system that was built, from the ground up, by and for comic book stores. There are several peculiarities of our industry that need to be accounted for, and MOBY POS not only understood them, but is custom built around them.”
