They have been impressed with the inventory management MOBY POS provides. “The fallacy of cycle sheets is that the number of copies received minus the number of copies on the shelf doesn’t necessarily leave you with the number of copies sold. There are pull copies, damaged copies and misplaced copies that don’t show up in the typical cycle sheet routine but end up being counted as sold. Now not only do I know exactly how many copies of Blackest Night #1 I sold but I also see the legs a big event book like that or Captain America Reborn can have. I see other retailers selling out and re-ordering hit books but MOBY POS has shown me how long the sales window actually is on these best-sellers.”
Carr does wish MOBY POS could do more. “For our two stores, the lack of a multi-store platform is the major drawback right now…but I know they’re working on it.“
But MOBY POS saves Earth-2 time, and that translates into dollars. “Ordering is much more efficient. Especially re-ordering. I used to have to find every item in the Diamond system and some generic titles are a pain (try to find From Hell or All-Star Superman quickly). Now I can generate a list of what I sold, click on what I want to reorder and export a ready to upload csv file with all the correct item codes. And no more cycle sheeting. Having to count comics every week was a huge time investment. Now I can just pull up a list of what I need to restock.”
Earth-2 Comics is a Los Angeles retailer that has been operating for 7 years and is the only multi-store chain in the Los Angeles area. Earth-2 was tired of the inefficiency and disorganization that surrounds traditional paper record keeping and cycle sheeting.
Prior to using MOBY POS, Earth-2 used a custom database that interfaced with Diamond’s catalog, but could not track sales independently. Their old system relied on manually entering cycle sheet information, and not actual sales data. “When we made the switch, MOBY POS had been up and running for years and had proven success. Also, in seeing demos, it was clear the MOBY POS was designed by people who have a store and fully understand what a comic book retailer needs in a point-of-sale system” says Carr D’Angelo, co-owner of Earth-2 Comics.
He also feels that MOBY POS has changed the way they do business. “Better sales information means better ordering means better inventory control. One of our customers’ favorite features is that they can ask us if they already bought a certain book or issue and we can tell them.”
